Our presenter for this evening will be Christine Bogle, who worked as a New Zealand diplomat for over thirty years, serving in Peru, Rome, Madrid, Tonga and Mexico, as well as various positions with the Ministry in Wellington.

Christine will talk about some of her experiences as Ambassador in Madrid (covering Spain, Morocco and the Holy See) and Mexico (covering also Cuba, Venezuela, Guatemala and El Salvador), speaking partly in Spanish and partly in English. Some of the highlights are:

  • Involvement in Spain’s ‘Asia-Pacific Plan’ to reach out to New Zealand for bilateral initiatives
  • Negotiating film coproduction, language assistant exchange and air services agreements in Spain
  • Strengthening trade, economic and educational ties with Mexico
  • Experience during the creation of the Pacific Alliance (initiative between Mexico, Peru, Chile and Colombia)

Christine has now left MFAT and is studying for a PhD in Politics at VUW. As she is no longer working in MFAT, this will not be a presentation on government policy, but rather some reminiscences of key issues and events in those countries at the time, and some of the particular themes that the Embassy was working on.

In 1977, Kati was a passenger on the Greek ship ‘Australis’ which was the first passenger ship in ten years to pass through the Magellan Strait due to the disagreement between Argentina and Chile.

In her presentation, Kati will make reference to the 1526 Loaisa expedition through the Magellan Strait and will then talk about an article entitled ‘The Mystery’ from an Australian newspaper probably dated February 1989 which promoted a book ‘The Lost Caravel Re-explored’ by Robert Langdon who spent most of his life researching manuscripts relating to Pacific history.

Back in 1981 Robert Langdon received the ‘Knights Cross of the Order of Queen Isabella’ for services to Spain overseas.Robert Langdon’s theory makes sense to some but not to others.

Questions remain. We should be aware of his theory.

Fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (Spanish: El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha), this Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was published in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615. It is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon.

The presenter, the Spanish Embassy’s Cultural Affairs Counsellor, Vicente Mas Taladriz,  will give an illustrated talk entitled Don Quixote Part Two,  commemorating 400 years since the novel's publication.

A presentation by Donna Peters

Where: MacKenzie Room, St Johns in the City, Willis Street (Entry from Dixon St.)

When:
7.30pm, Thursday 19th March.

Entry: Members free / Non- members $5

Donna Peters will give an illustrated talk about her recent tour to “España Verde” (Green Spain) which is the North Western part of Spain where few foreign tourists go. There the influence of the Atlantic Ocean brings abundant rain, hence the area is extremely verdant. The country-side is very mountainous and the coastline is spectacularly rugged.

The towns and cities are also historically and culturally notable, not least of all Santiago de Compostela and the Basque city of Donostia/San Sebastian.

A light supper with sangria will be served as usual. Don't miss it!

"Conversations about the Latin American Art"

Last Thursday 19 of June, in the McKenzie Room of St John's in the City, the Venezuelan artist Eliecer Reverol talked about the Latin American Art.

In order to understand the latest artistic movements, we went through each country exploring their roots. We got to know how the Latin American art emerges from complex and cross-bred cultures and we have investigated its surprising freshness and originality.

We had the opportunity to appreciate and analyse some greatest modern artists' works, like Joaquín Torres García (Uruguay) Wifredo Lam (Cuba), Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo (México), and Fernando Botero (Colombia).

The treatment of this material was useful to understand the influence and the value of the visual arts in general.

The presentation was in Spanish with some English translations.

We concluded the evening with tapas, empanadas and a couple of glasses of sangría

Otra España:

Un recorrido por pequeños pueblos

''Another Spain: excursion through some smaller townships of La Rioja, the Spanish Pyrenees and the Morella regions".

This first social evening of the year, last Thursday 22 May , was presented by Douglas Pearce, one of our members.  Douglas, who is Professor of Tourism Management at Victoria University Wellington, shared with us a side of  Spain less familiar to most of us: smaller rural townships.

We 'travelled' mainly to the northern part of Spain (the region of La Rioja and the Spanish Pyrenees) and to Morella, one of the first settlements in Spain, a historic walled town perched on a hill near the border of the Comunidad Valencia with Aragón and Catalonia.

This illustrated talk was given mainly in Spanish with the images doing most of the talking.

We concluded the evening with wine from the Rioja region accompanied by 'tapas'.
